Description: This deposit gathers audio-visual material documenting a Pehuenche migratory journey through the Andean valley of Butalelbún, Alto Biobío, Chile. It constitutes a first approximation to Chedungun, a Mapudungun dialect spoken by approximately 5,000 speakers along the Queuco and Biobío rivers valleys. The aim of the deposit is to depict the language’s potential to express different aspects of the Pehuenche transitional lifestyle. The material encompasses both naturally occurring and elicited communicative events, before, during and after the seasonal ascent to the ‘veranada’ (the sacred highlands that are occupied by the Pehuenche families between the melting of snows and the arrival of winter). The data will be collected by linguists Pablo Fuentes (principal investigator) and Sonia Vita Manquepi (native speaker of the language and member of the Pehuenche community). The field assistant and main interviewer is Mónica Vita.
